We Are Community
In 2020 the world was turned upside down by a global pandemic, the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and a renewed effort to limit the rights of people in marginalized communities around the country. A call for equity and justice raged through our nation as we watched protests, violence, death, and heartbreak.
In Monroe people were galvanized. We posted signs in windows, hung flags from our porches, and marched in the streets demanding reform. The Monroe Equity Council was infused with new energy in volunteers and leaders looking to effect change and pursue equity. Over the years we have done this work together and we became the Monroe Equity Community (MEC).
The Monroe Equity Community envisions a diverse and inclusive Monroe where everyone is honored, safe, and represented. We embody a collaborative commitment to do the work necessary so that all people have access to opportunities according to their need.
The Monroe Equity Community approaches our mission together, working as agents of change, addressing inequity, racism, and systemic biases that exist in our schools, city, and community. We intentionally incorporate a variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences to improve decision-making and leverage the positive impacts of Monroe's diversity.
There has been so much hard work to do and so much more ahead. At the same time, there are many things to celebrate. As a community we have gathered to learn, to hurt, to share, and to support. We are committed to honoring the worth and value of every human being.
You are invited to join your community in the pursuit of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
